Initially served in France, and saw action in the Somme campaign. As Trainee Staff Captain on 11th Infantry Brigade HQ, took part in the battles of Messines (June 1917) and Ypres (Oct 1917) in Belgium - having been made Brigade Major in Aug 1917. He took part in the defence of Amiens (March 1918), the allided offensive (Aug) and the attack on the Hindenburg Line (Sept-Oct 1918).
